Considering the beeb has issued all the Dads Army or Only Fools etc from TV, is seems a travesty that the finest ever radio show doesn't get the same treatment as a radio production. Perhaps Nigel can make it happen for us. In the meantime, congrats to Mr Hamilton for this classic and for his astute awareness that it could only work on radio;like a lot of stuff, in fact

Yep, it certainly was originally scheduled for Feb. We all got very excited and then suddenly!! It wasn't anymore!!

And as far as I can make out, it's due to be transmitted early next year. I'm not even sure if it has been recorded yet...

it was only last year when i discovered 'Old Harry's Game' and it was quite by chance as i found that nothing intresting was on the tv, (as usual) so i decided to listen to radio 7 and thus discoved the underworld. I waited for a new seris to come, and i waited and waited and waited but, to my horror, I found that the bbc were not going to broadcast the new seris until next YEAR!!! Being at the ripe old age of..er..lets say I am in secondary school, this seems like FOREVER, and I was wondering when the bbc would realise that decent programs should not be droped in oder to air a program like the wonders of drying paint. I have heared it said that nothing is more boreing that watching paint dry, but listening to it...well..what can I say?

The available CD's are: Vol.1(with 3 episodes each from Series 1 & 2) and Vol.2(with 3 episodes each from series 3 & 4, which include those you already have). Three CD's in each volume. And of course the Christmas Special is also available on CD.

They are still available (or at least they were when I bought the Chrimbo Special, online from the Beeb Shop about 6 weeks ago). And I THINK Amazon UK still sell them.

I emailed the BBC and they just said it would be rescheduled and told me that the schedules were changed but they didnt know why. They also said that it will be transmitted in the future, but they dont know when. ANd they suggested keeping an eye on the 'Whats On' pages.

I guess that clears it up. !!?!?!?!?!?!??!

Thank you again for contacting the BBC.

Simon (who does the website)
I've e-mailed R4 asking the same questions, but haven't got a reply yet, so it looks like we'll have to wait.
Begs the question though, *why* did they pull it? Since Andy's rather good at slipping topical comments in, even whole episodes, was there a Hutton reference possibly? and is the BBC's being a bit overly cautious?
Although that said, when Jill Dando died, they simply re-recorded references to her.

Not that there's anything wrong with Mitch Ben though :-)

Series 5 - when will it be on??
Further Uncle Phil's post, both the Radio 4 and Radio Times web sites list "Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music" in the 11pm slot for Thurs Feb 19th. The Radio Times listing has changed in the last couple of days from Old Harry's Game to this.
-Thursday, February 12, 2004 at 11:53:32 (GMT)

Well, according to Digiguide it ain't on at that time (it has has "Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music" in that timeslot).

Ok, this may be wrong and Digiguide may download an update over the next few days, but it's not certain....

Possibly transmission has been put back a few weeks? I hope not.:-{

Have to agree with Tristan. OHG as a TV show or a cartoon just wouldn't work. The beauty of it being on radio is that the effects are all in the mind - Scumspawn's transformations being the best example. It wouldn't be the same.

Only ever really heard odd episodes before, but thanks to the overwhelming benificence of R7 I've been recording and listening to the first series [Sky+, then optically to Minidisc BTW, - a comedy archiver's dream come true]. Well, almost all the first series.... I think R7 changed their schedule on Sun 12th Jan, and I didn't get episode 1.2 'Corruption'. If anybody could send me an mp3 or WMA of this, I'd worship at your shrine forever.

Never heard any rumour to that effect. I once asked Phillip Pope, and there were certainly no plans at the time. Apart from anything else, it'd be a bit awkward to do visually - it would need a whacking special effects budget... unless it was a cartoon of course (like The Mr. Hell Show et al?).

Shame in a way - lots of TV viewers would love this programme, but will never get to realise it!

Hi I recently refound my old (and knackered) recordings of said program (and can't stop listening to em...I could probably dictate the entire script of each show). All I got however is a bit of Series 2 and series 4. So is anyone prepared to send me mp3s of the whole of OHG to date (I'm gonna by the BBC tape though). Please please email me. Oh yeah, definitely. Sensibly, Hamilton hasn't made it blatant - in fact, I'm not sure the word 'love' is ever used... and I was expecting the professor to accuse Satan of being in love (and probably then saying '...and that thought terrifies you') but Hamilton doesn't resort to the obvious. It was a more gentle and subtle affair than that - after all, love is most convincingly illustrated by actions and not declarations. Hamilton also throws in a mythical allusion by having the 'love interest' character bear the name 'Hope'. If I remember the Greek myth about the origins of sin correctly, Hope was the last thing to come out of Pandora's Box, the sole benevolent and positive component of a swarm of sins and evils. Quite appropriate really!
-Thursday, December 19, 2002 at 09:33:09 (GMT)
Liam
Cheers for that! I'll take that as encouraging - I can't say I've not been apprehensive about the idea of Satan falling in love, as it does seem a little out of character. I guess Hamilton has managed to pull it off, then?

Yep. Part 1 goes out at 6.30 on New Year's Eve, and is repeated at 11 that night. Then, Part 2 goes out at 6.30 and then 11 on New Year's Day.

Was at the recording last night - it was rather sweet actually, and Clare Skinner is well cast. Be prepared for a slightly different show, as Thomas and the Professor take a little bit of a back seat to allow for the introduction of a new character.

Supposedly they'd thought of transmitting it on Christmas Day but thought better of it... Christ's Birthday / Devil, Hell - bad combo, they reckoned!

Great site!
As for the show itself, it's got to be the best radio comedy ever made - and then some! I can't think of a better cast for this show, and the writing is superb!

Sadly, I too am lacking in a few episodes. The ones I don't have are as follows:

Series 1: Episodes 2,3,4
Series 2: Episodes 3,5,6
Series 3: Episodes 5,6
Series 4: Episode 4

Anyone who can swap or anything - give me a shout!

Great Show. I was fortunate enough to have some episodes taped from the radio, which I have recently encoded into MP3. I am missing the following ones, Season1 Ep2; S2 Ep3,6 (I have half of 5) S3 Ep ,2,3; and All of Season 4. If any one has any of these in any format, let me know, so that I may add it to my collection. I will return the favor with any episodes that you may be missing too.

Eternal thanks to Barry Piggott for the collection!

On the subject of another series - hope that any such recording also waits for availability of James Grout, Jimmy Mulville etc. as the series wouldn't be the same without them.

Does anyone know the the origin of the music for cello and piano in which Scumspawn plays both instruments at the same time in one of the episodes (can't remember which at the moment)?

I'm really interested in your CD of all four series, I have some on tape and some on mini-disc but they are not complete and most are out of order. Do you have an e-mail address so I can get in contact with you. By the way do you have any of Revolting People ?

Hello everyone, i'm a sixteen year old student, and i have spent many a happy hour listening to OHG i think it is much cleverer than many of the TV comedys, although some are excellent. i only posses tapes i have recorded myself but would very much like to fill the gaps i have for one reason or another, any suggestions?

Fifth series - no indication as yet. There's been a gap of about eighteen months to two years between each series, which was also true of Hamilton's "Drop the Dead Donkey"; I once asked Mr. Hamilton in late 1998 about the likelihood of a fourth series of OHG, and he said he needed to find the time to write it, so I'm sure that's a major consideration - time. Remember also, as a succesful writer of many years, Hamilton has other projects. Last year's untransmitted radio pilot "It's Only a Theory" doesn't seem to have taken off, but he still appears regularly on the News Quiz, "Revolting People" has had a second series, and on television we now have 'Bedtime' (10.35 tonight on BBC1); he's a busy boy!

We should also bear in mind that OHG is now seven years old and fresher projects may be more enticing to a writer of Hamilton's variety. Either way, I figure we'll have to wait a year or two to see a Series 5 if Mr. Hamilton decides to write it.

P.S. Does anybody know of a contact address for fans - it'd be nice if we could bring the site to his attention?

Has there been any indication of a Fifth Series?

BBC's reasons for releasing the episodes they have can only be guessed at. I think the most likely explanation, though, is that like many shows, OHG didn't truly hit it's stride until the second series. Not that series 1 is noticeably inferior, rather it isn't quite the same show as in subsequent series; you have Gary instead of Scumspawn, no Nick Revell, no Felicity Montagu, and Penelope Nice playing Deborah. Even the Professor's second name is different.

So with their cassette release the BBC were probably caught between releasing the show which was by then familiar to the fans, and its first incarnation. Perhaps they felt they needed to release the first episode in order to introduce the programme to new listeners, but didn't want to alienate people who had come to know a different show in the course of series 2 and 3. Why they couldn't have just started by releasing series 2, I don't know! I mean, it's set in Hell, how much explanation does that need???

What is certain is that commercial considerations are probably at work. I doubt that with this initial release they wanted to commit to releasing further episodes without knowing what the sales would be like, justifying their 'best of...' approach.

However - if you want to see them on cassette (or CD), there's no harm in making your feelings known. BBC do sometimes respond to demand, and it's been a year or so since that first cassette came out. Moreover, OHG is by no means an unpopular show, so the possibility of further releases must have occurred to them!

As a very recent discoverer of OHG, I've been trying to find past episodes to listen to. Is there really only the Series1 tape?! Not even CDs? I can't even find MP3s, only mentions of! Help!

I'm a big fan of Radio comedy in general, and have amassed a large collection of cassettes over the years. OHG is one of my favourites, and I'm lucky enough to have recorded them all at the time of transmission.
Now, using modern technology, I've even managed to record series four onto CD!

Love this site.

OHG is the best radio show in years. I am glad the BBC have brought out a tape at last but why only half of series one and two? True fans wan't to own every episode. I've already written to the BBC to say this. How about a few more fans making the point. Long live OHG!

Yeah, went to the recordings of most of both series. Never quite as good as OHG, but it definitely has its moments - usually when Andy Hamilton's Sgt McGurke is 'onstage'.

Only thing - the format strikes me as being uncannily similar to Allo Allo - small businessman trying to make ends meet, having to keep in with rebels and occupying forces etc. I'm sure this wasn't intended, but the parallels are fascinating.

Love the series, delighted to find a web page. If anyone has series 1,2 or 3 on tape I'd love copies. I have all of Series 4 if anybody needs them.

Anybody listen to Revolting People, also written by and starring Andy Hamilton?

Fab site as ever - getting better all the time, in fact.

Any chance of fitting in articles about para-Harry's Game stuff? Like, cast details - the other stuff they've done... or relevant other stuff by Andy Hamilton?

Does anybody have copies of all the episode's that have been broadcast already? I've only heard a few from season 2 and would love to listen to every episode, the few that i heard were hillarious and would love a copy off them all. I am willing to pay for any expenses incured for tapes and postage. If you are able to help me please either email me or you can phone me on 07751 446317.
many thanks Ian .....
